2008 Grand Fall Classic Results

October 1, 2008

Nothing could dampen the spirits of competitors and spectators at the Westbrook Hunt Club’s eleventh annual Grand Fall Classic, not even Hurricane Kyle.  The Hunt Club held their “A” rated horse show September 25th-28th, despite nearly five inches all total of rain.   Competitors braved the elements from the hurricane’s influence on New England to participate in the many Equitation Finals held over the weekend. The spacious indoor arena and adjacent warm-up arena kept horses and riders dry as they prepped and rode their courses.  Other horse and rider teams demonstrated remarkable dedication in the inclement weather as they competed outside in the hunter ring.

Many fabulous awards donated by various vendors were given out throughout the show.  A catered breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday morning helped brighten everyone’s spirits as the rain continued nearly steadily over the first three days.  Saturday evening, the Hunt Club hosted an exhibitor cocktail reception welcomed and enjoyed by all. The grounds and jumps were generously and tastefully decorated with a variety of colorful fall foliage that helped brighten the atmosphere of an otherwise gray weekend.

Among the many in the winner’s circle was rider Julie Weiss with trainer Val Renihan.  Weiss rode to victory in both the PHA Medal and the Maclay Regional.  Winning the Regional Junior Medal Final was Zazou Hoffman under trainer Missy Clark and for the Zone 1 Medal Final, the first place award went to Victoria Birdsall with trainer Andre Dignelli.

Thanks to the committed riders and their teams, a busy show staff, and wonderful sponsors, this year’s Grand Fall Classic was a true, albeit wet, achievement.
